JideTech OpenVPN 4G PTZ Camera Solution

OpenVPN for 4G IP Cameras: Secure Remote Access, NVR Integration & Bandwidth Optimization

Build a secure, flexible and bandwidth-efficient video surveillance system with JideTech OpenVPN-enabled 4G PTZ cameras.

Modern surveillance projects require more than viewing cameras through a mobile application. Security integrators and industrial users often need to connect remote 4G cameras to their own servers, NVRs and customized monitoring platforms.

JideTech offers OpenVPN-enabled 4G PTZ cameras supporting secure remote connectivity, RTSP video streaming, ONVIF integration and compatible third-party software solutions.

The Solution: Connect your 4G camera to your own OpenVPN server, record video through a compatible NVR, and distribute video locally to other applications to reduce unnecessary 4G bandwidth consumption.

1. Why Use OpenVPN with a 4G IP Camera?

Most mobile operators use Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT), which means a 4G camera may not have a publicly accessible IP address. This can make direct remote access difficult.

OpenVPN allows the camera to establish an outbound encrypted connection to a customer-managed VPN server. Authorized devices can then access the camera through its assigned VPN IP address, provided the required network routing and permissions are configured.

  • Secure Remote Access: Connect to cameras through an encrypted VPN tunnel.
  • Independent Infrastructure: Use your own VPN server instead of relying exclusively on a manufacturer's P2P cloud.
  • RTSP Streaming: Retrieve live video through compatible monitoring software.
  • NVR Integration: Record video from remote cameras through a VPN network.
  • PTZ Control: Implement supported Pan, Tilt and Zoom commands through ONVIF or documented interfaces.
  • Multi-Site Deployment: Connect remote cameras from different locations to a centralized monitoring platform.

2. OpenVPN Surveillance System Architecture

The following diagram illustrates how JideTech 4G PTZ cameras connect to a customer-managed OpenVPN server, NVR and local monitoring software.

4G IP Camera OpenVPN NVR Network Architecture

Typical Network Architecture

Step 1: JideTech 4G PTZ Camera

Step 2: 4G Cellular Network

Step 3: Customer-Managed OpenVPN Server

Step 4: NVR Recording System

Step 5: Local PC / Customer Monitoring Software

The camera establishes an OpenVPN connection over the 4G network. The authorized NVR accesses the camera's RTSP stream through the VPN and records the video.

If the NVR supports live RTSP output or stream forwarding, local monitoring applications can retrieve the video directly from the NVR without establishing additional video streams from the remote camera.

Note: The NVR must be able to reach the camera's VPN IP address through properly configured network routing and firewall permissions.

3. How to Set Up the OpenVPN Surveillance System

Step 1: Prepare Your OpenVPN Server

First, deploy your own OpenVPN server. Depending on your infrastructure, the server may be installed on:

  • Cloud VPS
  • Linux server
  • Windows server
  • VMware virtual machine

Your IT administrator must configure the VPN server, client authentication, network routing and firewall permissions.

Important: JideTech provides OpenVPN configuration documentation for supported cameras. The deployment and management of the customer's OpenVPN server, VMware environment and network infrastructure are the customer's responsibility.

Step 2: Connect the Camera to OpenVPN

Configure the JideTech camera using the appropriate OpenVPN client settings and credentials.

Once the connection is established, authorized computers and NVRs can access the camera through its VPN IP address if the network routes and permissions allow access.

Step 3: Connect the NVR

Configure a compatible NVR to receive the camera's RTSP video stream through the VPN network.

The NVR can then record video according to its supported recording schedule and storage configuration.

If the NVR does not include a built-in VPN client, a properly configured VPN gateway may be required.

Step 4: Forward Video to Other Applications

When the NVR supports RTSP output or live stream forwarding, it can distribute the received video to other applications on the local network.

This enables centralized recording and viewing without requiring every application to pull a separate stream directly from the 4G camera.

Step 5: Integrate PTZ Control

For supported camera models, developers can implement Pan, Tilt and Zoom functions through ONVIF PTZ services or available camera-specific CGI/API documentation.

PTZ commands can be sent directly to the camera through the VPN network. They do not necessarily need to pass through the NVR.

4. How to Reduce 4G Bandwidth Consumption

One of the biggest challenges in remote 4G surveillance is mobile data consumption.

Traditional Method: Multiple Direct Video Streams

Consider a surveillance system in which three applications need access to the same camera:

  • NVR for continuous recording
  • Desktop software for live monitoring
  • Third-party security management software

If all three applications independently request video from the camera, multiple streams may be transmitted over the 4G network.

This can increase upstream bandwidth requirements and mobile data usage.

Optimized Method: NVR Stream Forwarding

A more efficient approach is to send one video stream from the camera to the NVR and distribute the received stream locally.

4G Camera → OpenVPN → NVR → Local PC / Software

One upstream camera stream with local distribution to multiple applications.

Feature Direct Streaming NVR Forwarding
NVR Video Source Camera Camera
PC Video Source Camera Local NVR
Third-Party Software Camera Local NVR
Upstream 4G Streams Potentially Multiple Potentially One
4G Data Efficiency Lower Potentially Higher
Important: The NVR must support live RTSP output or stream forwarding. RTSP input support alone does not guarantee this function. OpenVPN itself does not compress video or automatically reduce 4G data consumption.

5. Remote PTZ Control Through OpenVPN

JideTech PTZ cameras can be integrated into compatible third-party monitoring platforms.

Depending on the selected camera model and firmware, supported functions may include:

  • Pan: Horizontal rotation
  • Tilt: Vertical movement
  • Optical Zoom: Zoom in on distant objects
  • Preset Positions: Move to predefined monitoring positions where supported
  • Third-Party Integration: ONVIF PTZ or documented CGI/API interfaces

Customers can develop their own control software using the supported interfaces.

The availability of individual PTZ commands and CGI/API functions depends on the camera model and firmware version.

6. OpenVPN with VMware, Linux and Cloud VPS

OpenVPN servers can be hosted on different platforms, including Linux servers, cloud VPS infrastructure and VMware virtual machines.

VMware is a virtualization platform, while OpenVPN provides the encrypted network connection. Both technologies can be used together.

However, a successful VPN connection does not automatically mean that the PC or NVR can access the camera.

Your network administrator should verify:

  • OpenVPN server configuration
  • VPN client authentication
  • VPN IP address allocation
  • Routing between devices and networks
  • Firewall permissions
  • VMware virtual network configuration
  • NVR connectivity and video stream settings

7. Troubleshooting Common OpenVPN Camera Issues

OpenVPN Connected but Camera Is Unreachable

Check the camera's VPN IP address, server routing, firewall rules and network permissions.

Video Freezing or Intermittent Streaming

Check the 4G signal, network latency, packet loss, available upload bandwidth, video bitrate and OpenVPN connection stability.

NVR Cannot Access the Camera

Verify the NVR's access to the VPN network, camera credentials, RTSP configuration and supported protocols.

NVR Cannot Forward Video to Other Software

Confirm whether your NVR supports live RTSP output or stream forwarding. Recording support and RTSP relay support are different functions.

PTZ Control Is Not Working

Verify that your software supports the camera's PTZ interface and that the required commands are available for the selected model and firmware.
